On 12 August, WWF-Hong Kong held our annual Flag Day on Hong Kong Island, inviting the public to support local biodiversity conservation. This year's event took place on a Wednesday, a change from Flag Day's usual Saturday slot. Despite the summer heat, volunteers and supporters came out across Hong Kong Island to show their commitment to the city's threatened wildlife and habitats.  

Flag Day remains one of our most iconic public fundraising events, connecting supporters directly with our on-the-ground conservation work, from habitat restoration to species protection and environmental education. We are deeply grateful to the volunteers and members of the public who braved the summer heat on this sweltering Wednesday, demonstrating the strength of collective action in safeguarding our shared natural heritage.

From early morning till noon, dedicated volunteers and generous members of the public came together across Hong Kong Island, uniting for a common cause: protecting our city's 'hidden neighbours'.

This Year's Theme: Protecting Hong Kong's "Hidden Neighbours"

Flag Day 2026 carried the theme "Protecting Hong Kong's Biodiversity – Creating a Place Where Life Can Thrive Together," inspired by findings from The State of Hong Kong Biodiversity 2025 report. This year's Gold Flag stickers spotlight six local "hidden neighbours": Eurasian Otter, Chinese White Dolphin, Chinese Windmill (Byasa confusus), Bonelli's Eagle, Staghorn Coral, and Butterfly Fish. Each species represents countless others hidden across Hong Kong's diverse habitats, from northern wetlands to eastern coral reefs, many now facing unprecedented survival pressures from habitat loss, pollution and climate change.

New Ways to Donate: Upgraded Gold Flag and Online Volunteering

This year introduced two new fundraising elements. The Gold Flag package souvenirs received an upgrade, with new limited-edition "hidden neighbours" T-shirts featuring the Eurasian Otter, Bonelli's Eagle and Common Kingfisher, echoing the "hidden neighbours" species highlighted in The State of Hong Kong Biodiversity 2025 report and giving supporters a more meaningful way to show their support for conservation.

Alongside the on-street event, WWF-Hong Kong also launched an Online Volunteer scheme this year. Supporters can register to create a personalised e-flag bag, share it with friends and family via social media or email, and track their fundraising progress digitally, extending the spirit of Flag Day beyond a single morning on the streets.
