A new WWF-Hong Kong report confronts us with an alarming truth: more than 25% of wildlife species in our city are at risk of local extinction. The State of Hong Kong Biodiversity 2025 reveals the stark breadth of this crisis and calls for urgent action. The report, the first comprehensive evaluation of Hong Kong’s biodiversity in a generation, highlights the critical species and habitats that are most vulnerable to the pressures of urbanisation, habitat loss and invasive species. It provides us with a clear and urgent roadmap to prioritise our conservation efforts and presents a call to action for everyone.

While the situation is dire, it is not without hope. The report also highlights the power and possibilities of collective action through societal commitment, research and policy-making. By working with other stakeholders, we can protect these threatened biodiversity hotspots. Our recent partnership with the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects advocating for Nature-based Solutions in the New Territories exemplifies the innovative, forward-thinking approaches we take to create a more sustainable and nature-positive city. By integrating natural systems into urban planning, we can shape a future where development and conservation go hand in hand.

Equally transformative is WWF-Hong Kong’s “Smart Wetland 2.0” project, which leverages cutting-edge technology to enhance conservation efforts in Mai Po Nature Reserve. Through solar-powered camera traps and AI-assisted monitoring, we track elusive wetland wildlife, improving our understanding of and ability to protect these vital ecosystems. This initiative highlights how innovation is becoming a cornerstone of our conservation strategy.

We must all play a part in safeguarding our environment. From switching off lights during Earth Hour to advocating for Nature-based Solutions in our communities, every action counts. Together, we have the power to protect Hong Kong’s rich biodiversity and ensure a sustainable and thriving future for all.

In this issue, you’ll meet the expert team behind The State of Hong Kong Biodiversity 2025, and get an in-depth look into several WWF-Hong Kong conservation initiatives and community engagement activities. Please enjoy!
