Mainstreaming NbS and Policy Advocacy

WWF-Hong Kong

We launched The State of Hong Kong Biodiversity 2025 report and the Hong Kong Terrestrial Biodiversity Hotspot Map 2025, in association with other environmental groups and local researchers. These publications will increase interest in overlooked fauna and habitats, inform strategic conservation actions and help enhance relevant policies, laws and regulations.

WWF-Hong Kong

We signed a Memorandum of Understanding with HKILA to promote integrating NbS into government urban planning and development. This alliance combines our expertise to address biodiversity loss and climate change.

We continued to develop scalable NbS for marine ecosystem restoration.
Partnering with research teams, we pioneered seagrass restoration using innovative techniques that produced effective habitat recovery. This scalable, cost-efficient method will be expanded to support large-scale ecosystem restoration.
Our “Reviving Our Corals” initiative nurtured 680 coral fragments at our Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre. These were outplanted at Tolo Harbour sites with an 85% survival rate. The centre has become a leading coral rescue hub, with enhanced laboratory facilities and eco-tours to engage the public.

Harnessing Innovation for Conservation Impact

Launched in June 2024, the Lee Hysan Foundation’s three-year Growing Mai Po project is revitalising Mai Po’s traditional rice paddies as critical habitats for migratory birds. Integrating smart technologies with traditional wetland management techniques, the project is strengthening climate resilience while creating vital feeding and resting habitats for migratory birds and other wildlife.

Mai Po Nature Reserve received the Gold Star Wetland Centre award from Wetland Link International, recognising our outstanding education programmes, advanced ecological monitoring and cross-sectoral partnerships. This award affirms WWF-Hong Kong’s leadership in wetland conservation and environmental education.

By leading the Asia-Pacific Counter Illegal Wildlife Trade Hub, WWF-Hong Kong coordinates efforts across WWF’s regional offices to fight and prevent wildlife crime using innovative technologies. The hub has supported in developing technology that has screened 25,000+ high-risk shipments, launched a cybercrime toolkit to tackle online wildlife trafficking and collaborated with the United Nations University’s Global AI Network to champion “AI for Nature” initiatives.
